- hi,
-
-
-
- >I am interested in buying a faster modem and know very little
- >about the subject so I have a number of questions.
-
- good....
-
-
- >1. Is there a FAQ or some other source of information somewhere
- >on the net that would bring me up to speed?
-
-
- maybe, i don't know!
-
- >If not:
-
- >2. Would a 28.8 V.34 modem be overkill for standard phone lines?
-
-
- Ask to your Bell or other company technical support!
-
-
- >3. Am I correct in assuming that any external PC modem would
- >work with my Amiga 4000/040? (I can therefore take advantage of
- >the lowest price I can find at generic computer/electronics
- >stores?)
-
- Yes.. you're right! A modem is a piece of hardware to use RS232 connection
- and a phone line, everything else that come with it is designe to work with
- a particular machine, but the modem work with all the machine! (in an
- external version) For Internal modem, they are normaly for PC, and PCMCIA
- modem should be support by AmigaTechnologies sooner!
-
-
- You will need a terminal program and a fax program (GPFax & Terminus &
- Term4.5, that's what I'm using!)
-
-
- >4. Are there differences in performance between modems with
- >comparable specifications from different manufacturers? (Does
- >one brand outperform the others in real-use situations?)
-
- Not really, I'm using a Supra 28800 (Full version, not the Express) and a
- Practical Peripheral 28800, thay are both working very well, and very easy
- to setup, not like the USR Sportster that is very hard to setup!
-
- They are both v.34.
-
-
- >5. I would like to stay in the $220.00 range. Are there
- >features in that range that I should look for? (I believe that
- >I've seen some reference to the ability to upgrade to new
- >standards.)
-
-
- The PPI28800 is not very expensive, it's 239$CDN. (Wonder Computer Ottawa:
- (613) 596-2542)
-
-
- >6. Are there features, brands or models that I should avoid?
-
- I don't want to recommand you a Sportster, cause it give me a lot of
- trouble, The Supra and PPI are setup in a minute!
-
-
- >7. Is there anything else that I should know? (Will modems be
- >made obsolete in the next 6 months by cable TV links or some
- >other link to the internet?)
-
-
- MAYBE.. I cannot tell you anything about that! But I will go to the next
- generation if a cable modem is 10 times faster!
-
-
- >I appreciate any help that you can provide in filling in these
- >blank spots, thanks,
-
- hope that will help you a bit!
-
-
- bye!
